The Whitsundays Apollo Tour

Updated: Aug 19, 2022

The Whitsundays are made up of a collection of 74 Islands over the Great Barrier Reef. It's in-between Brisbane and Cairns along the East Coast on the tropical coast of Queensland. I had no idea what to expect before the tour and it was one of the most incredible experiences of my life.

I chose to do the Apollo three day and two nights tour with an inclusive dive. It's an ex-sailing yacht that can carry 27 guests and three crew members. The unique thing about the Apollo is that it's the only racing yacht that gives the option to scuba dive around the islands. You aren't allowed to take zippers onto the boat, this includes clothing and bags. You also cannot bring glass so throw those goon bags over your back.

On the tour, you'll see Whitehaven Beach.

Like the sand on Fraser Island, it is made up of 98% pure silica, which has been brought onto the beach over millions of years. Due to the components of the sand, it never gets overly hot so it's always comfortable to walk on. It has won awards for being one of the cleanest beaches in the world. They even filmed a scene for the fifth instalment of "Pirates of the Caribbean - Dead Men Tell no Tales" on the beach. The sand was so white and soft. There are sharks in the area but only small ones that wouldn't cause harm.

You'll also get to snorkel and scuba dive in areas like Luncheon Bay, Caves Cove, Blue Pearl Bay and so many others. We even got to see a turtle whilst we were snorkelling. I also saw parrotfish and clownfish. The great thing about the diving instructors is that they are so experienced and know all these different species of fish so you know exactly what you are seeing.

Aside from the exploring, you get to fill your time swimming around, snorkelling, jumping into the sea and making friends. We had a party every night on the deck and with no light pollution whatsoever the night sky was unreal.

It is a dream of mine to learn how to sail so living on a sailboat for three days made me want to learn even more! I loved this experience so much because of the unique beauty of the place. I never expected to be surrounded by green islands in Australia instead I pictured red ground and outback. It was also my first time snorkelling which was an incredible experience and something that was on my bucket list since I was little. I love being on, in or around water so this was the perfect experience for me. The sunsets were beautiful, you get your food made for you, we had so much fun and got super tanned. It's an East Coast experience I would recommend to everyone.
